In the mid 1970s, as an army sergeant, I was given the unusual job (for me that is) of ‘Bn Photographer’ during a 2½ year tour of duty in N. Ireland. As both sides of the conflict went about their tasks, the jobs given to me ranged from exciting to boring and occasionally frightening. Far too often, however, they were simply distressing. The one lesson I well remember from the explosion at the Ballykinler army barracks in 1974 was that soldiers don’t like having their wounded comrades photographed! By comparison, however, my own experiences were ‘very’ minor when compared to the subject of this book.Ivan Bawtree worked as a photographer for the ‘Graves Registration Unit’ from 1915-1919. Operating on ‘yesterday’s front line,’ his job was to record the final resting place of the many Allied soldiers killed. It was not a job where his work might be included in any headlines but it really is remarkable how his many pictures came to be used and the legacy they now provide for history.This is a lavishly illustrated book with at least one image on the majority of the pages. Bearing in mind the photographer’s job these do include photographs of grave sites, individual grave markers and some of human remains. But don’t get the idea this is a work based on the morbid - certainly not. The remainder show Bawtree going about his work in all parts of Flanders and France, the problems associated with darkroom facilities and the ingenious way in which he washed his films. There are also some fascinating pictures of the war-torn landscape.There are several images which seem to stand out from the rest but the one found on p.131 is particularly poignant. This shows a simple card which was sent to the next-of-kin of a fallen soldier who had been buried near Arras. On the one side was a photograph of his grave and, on the other, the information included details of the nearest Railway Station…Fittingly, the last photograph in the book is one of Ivan in happy retirement. It appears just below an image of the MBE he was awarded in 1977 for his unstinting work with the Boys Brigade.One often reads accounts from whatever major conflict which differ, even contradict, others from equally qualified writers. In this account from WW1, however, we have a very different story altogether. It is a story about a man who looked after the private side of death and did what was required to ensure the graves of the fallen were properly recorded for the benefit of their families. Very short book. Everything you might want to know about oysters in Paris and Oyster culture. It drags a bit here and there but worth it. Good simple oystercrecipes at the end.

What a pleasant shock to discover that there were more than a couple of species of oysters and many ways to eat them. I took the book with me to my local restaurant that serves more than one species of oyster and enjoyed experimenting with the options of species and sauces. I shall take the book with me on my next trip to France!

Sent this book to friends in Washington state who are farming oysters...they loved it....!

The world of Virology is becoming more important by the day. The statistically overdue influenza pandemic makes rapid understanding of viruses an even more urgent topic. I have found this book to be of great benefit when explaining concepts ("What does H5N1 mean?") to those who need to get a scientific view of viruses but are not life scientists themselves, especially government leaders, corporate executives and the like. Unfortunately material just cannot be produced fast enough to keep pace with the evolution in scientific understanding that is taking place. I highly recommend this book; however for those new to virology it is not a "quick afternoon read". It does have very likeable features such as the chapter structure which begins with a synopsis called "At a glance" and a list of abbreviations and a standardised colour coding for molecular diagrams. The "Virologists Vocabulary"(pp335-347) is really a glossary and although not all-embracing (big ask) it is very useful. Glossaries and definition sections must become mandatory components of all texts I believe, especially given the expansion rate of jargon and abbreviation.Overall, this is a good quality book that is easy to read and well endowed with illustrations. As an aside biomedical and scientific illustrations do need to improve dramatically in all texts. I am aware of the time/cost and effort issues of this statement however a good illustration is worth (to many) more than 1000 words and a poor illustration can be simply counter productive. Rapid education in virology (which is absolutely essential) requires students and educators alike to have easy access to verified comparitive material. DVD's or other electronic complementary delivery techniques would have been of great assistance. SeePrinciples of Molecular Virology (Standard Edition), Fourth Edition as a useful, but not exclusive example.

It covers the subject in a logical fashion, introducing why you should care about the study of viruses, the core concepts to viruses (e.g. entry, replication, etc.), the types of viruses, and applications of how to analyze and deal with them. The book provides a number of figures and tables, which makes it easier to visualize what the book describes in regards to the virus and its activities. I recently graduated from college, studying primarily biology based topics; however, I never learned much about viruses. This is an excellent textbook, especially in connection w/ what I learned. Before reading this book; the reader should have a basic understanding of Cell Biology and Genetics (i.e. replication).

This is the most friendly text book I've seen. It's written in a very "reader-friendly" format. The organization of the material makes it easier to read and understand. It's not your typical dry reading, colorless book. For me, if I have to try to tackle such a difficult topic as Virology, I don't want a book that will put me to sleep. I find this book to be a much better option. I think you will too.

This is an OK book on virology.My problem is that it reads funny, like they were trying to cram in as much information they could without having it read well.I seriously hope that the second edition is better.

Couple friends found this book excellent and recommended it. It's a quick read, filled with good humor, anecdote and extensive direct experience.I particularly appreciated the candid treatment of the entire topic of networking, dispelling my view of it being a "schmoozy" practice that often felt like it was a waste of time when people asked to network with me. I now see how those notable exceptions that I truly enjoyed had leveraged the concepts in this book.I was asked to speak earlier this week at an upper level college class for Finance students and recommended this book to them. The professor is planning to acquire it and provide for each of his students.

While it doesn't account for many different scenarios like asking contacts to let you know if they see or hear of any opportunities, this concise guide helps you gain evangelists which would be willing to do more than be your eyes and ears by demonstrating respect, gratitude and preparedness.

Perez and Ballinger do make the valid point that it's who you know, and lay out a solid roadmap for good conversations and follow-up that build friendly business relationships.The reason for my low rating? The book does not outline the entire process.There is no discussion of HOW to make the first contact/secure a meeting with these new networking contacts. For all the anecdotes, the job seeker conveniently has friends-of-friends in high places. In other words, this book is for the person who already is well-connected but simply needs to build and strengthen those relationships.But look elsewhere for discussion on effective ways to break the ice and request a meeting.

I'm often asked for networking advice as the founder of an internship program. These requests come from all levels - interns to professionals returning to the workforce. My first recommendation is read "The 20 Minute Networking Meeting". I've handed out nearly 100 copies. This is the right way to handle networking…with focus, intention, gratitude and giving back. My hats off to Nathan Perez and Marcia Ballinger for bringing this resource forward to all levels of job-seekers. Thank you.

Since I am a Career Management Consultant, having any great advice to pass on is welcomed. This book provides practical advice and I love showing an ineffective networking meeting to an effective one. I have already recommended this to others.

This is a great little guide for people embarking on the art of informational interviewing and networking. I do think that the time allocated to build a real relationship is a bit short but it is a good lesson on being well prepared and how to manage the meeting

As a job search coach I recommend this book to my clients. It's hard to imagine a better how-to guide on the subject. Reading this book and using its suggestions can greatly improve the results of your networking meetings.

It gives a great introduction to networking and provides checklists and examples.

Was hoping it would show pictures of what to look for, but because it only lists the words of what to find, my daughter doesn't find it very easy and struggles to find items.I like it though lol but some of those pics are so obscure that without knowing what it looks like that you're trying to find, its a struggle.

After spending $35 for an annual subscription to the Highlights magazine, I discovered that the only thing my daughter liked about it was the Hidden Pictures. So for 1/4 the price, she can have tons of hidden pictures in this one book. Genius! Such a fun time filler for car rides, and quiet time, or something we can work on together.

We got this book for our 9 year old daughter and she loves it! We often work on the pictures as a family. We take the book with us when we eat out at times, and it helps pass the time while waiting on our meal. We are able to find all the hidden pictures though some have taking longer than others. They are very clever drawn into facets of the larger picture. I am amazed at how clever many of the different items have been drawn into parts of other things. She brought the book with her to a dinner out when a friend brought their daughter, and they had a great time in the book wile the adults chatted. Just finishing this one and will order another.

My wife absolutely LOVED getting this in her stocking.We had been talking several times recently about having subs to Highlights when we were young and that the Hidden Pictures were always the first page we'd turn to (next was The Timbertoes lol).This definitely hit the nostalgia in the nose and we're both having a blast going through it!

My husband is pretty much bedridden. These keep his mind active. They're great to take into the office, too. Everyone seems to take a moment to find something; it shifts your thinking a bit. Not a bad idea when the brain needs a break.

The little I nanny for are OBSESSED with these Highlights Hidden Pictures. So much so that 3 days after I gave them this, it was finished. It was challenging, but they had a little help from me and their parents. The boys are ages 6 and 8 so I would suggest it'd be too hard for kids under 5.

My six year old daughter and I usually love doing hidden pictures but this book wasn't very satisfying. The drawings were more like suggestions of an object.

Great book for all ages and is not too difficult so it's great for my mother who has dementia. Keeps her mind active.
